Black Theater in Texas: Stages of Struggle and Celebration
This exhibition highlights the extensive groundbreaking research developed during the production of two new historically and artistically related publications, Stages of Struggle and Celebration: A Production History of Black Theatre in Texas (2016), written by Dr. Sandra Mayo and Dr. Elvin Holt, and Acting Up and Getting Down: Plays by African American Texans (2014), an anthology, edited by Drs. Mayo and Holt. It is one of the multipronged elements of their Preserving the History of Black Theatre in Texas Project that also includes archiving and web development.
Dr. Sandra Mayo, director of graduate studies and associate professor of theatre at Texas State University since 2001, has taught theatre history, literature, theory, and diversity studies. In addition to working as a university administrator and professor, her credentials include theatre directing and producing. She holds degrees from Syracuse University, Buffalo State, and the State University of New York at Buffalo.
Dr. Elvin Holt, professor of English, has taught on both the high school and university levels for more than thirty years, with specializations in American, African American and African literatures, composition, folklore and cultural studies. Professor Holt holds degrees from Prairie View A&M College, Texas State University and the University of Kentucky.
