28Method for Making an Offering for Rain in San Pablito, Pahuatlan, Puebla.
Author: Mr. Alfonso García Téllez.
August 10, 1978This text will discuss an offering for rain. All the important figures in the town got together and asked why the rain hadn’t come for the harvest. We’re already starting to lose crops in the milpas. Because of this, everyone is hurting; because of this, we had a specific meeting. (1)
At the second meeting between the auxiliary judge and the auxiliary mayor and everyone in the town, we discussed what to do, especially for the people who have milpas with chiles, tomatoes, sugarcane, etc. The farmers were thankful because there is a custom to ask for rain. (2)
The people who have a lot of crops are the saddest because they’re going to lose all their work. The poor farmers are already going hungry because they can’t find work to get money. Because of this, they’ve discussed options available in the state of Hidalgo. (3)
In the state of Hidalgo, there is a very powerful cave called 2 Church [2 Iglesia]. This cave is where we’re going to make the offering. After we finish the offering, we’ll return to the town, and after two days have passed, there will be rain, and all the people will give thanks. (4)
This is what all the old folks say, because this is the story from our ancestors. The young people say: Now we’re going to renew the customs of our ancestors. And the old folks say, okay, if you want to renew those customs, we’re going to call a shaman, because we need to ask if we can renew those customs. (5)
There is a cave that is very old, that people call Two Church. There, there is an ancient god. Now, we’ve had a meeting with the mayor, to advise the authorities, and after the meeting, everyone in the town was in agreement. (6)
The mayor was charged with finding four shamans, one that is the leader and three other assistants. Once all the shamans meet, they’ll determine how many pieces of white amate paper and dark amate paper to bring, and how many flowers. (7)
The first is a thousand flowers of Zempoalxochitl [Cempoalxochitl, Tagetes erecta], that are called the thousand flowers of Zempoalxochitl, for necklaces, a thousand bunches of switchgrass, Mexican marigold flowers, corn husks, and a thousand palm flowers in the shape of the sun, with a small piece of carrizo cane. [image] Ancient-style bed. (8)
A thousand handfuls of amate paper to make the bed of the god of the ancients, of 2 Church, in Otomi they say “Mayonnija.” [yoho is “two”; ma'yo is “pastor, spiritual guide”; nijä is “temple, church” (Hernández Cruz, et al. 2010). Together, Sandstrom and Effrein Sandstrom (1986) translate this as “2 Church”.] For 15 days, the people of the town will make flower decorations. [Image] God of the ancients (9)
The people will provide money and amate paper, and they will work at specific jobs all 15 days. Also, the musicians will perform music from antiquity. [image] God of the ancients (10)
The musicians should also have a leader and helpers; the leader will go with the pilgrims, and the other helpers will stay in the oratory; here they will play all day and night until the pilgrims return. [Image] Mother Earth (11)
Three of the shamans will be charged with making the bed of the lord of the ancients, and his placemats, 10 of each thing, 10 pajaritos de mono, 10 eagles, 10 four-headed eagles, 10 children of the mountains, 10 star napkins, and 10 of double escovetillas del monte [possibly Ramaria flavia, Gonzalez Rodrigo (1993) says this is called escobeta in the region].
[image] Goddess of Sirens (12)The lead shaman will be charged with making two large dolls that are the spirits of the god of the ancients, and also the clothing. The man will wear a hat with a beaded shawl and a beaded shirt, and also will wear shoes. [Image] God of pineapples (13)
4 seamstresses will be charged with making all the clothing, and four girls will be their helpers; the girls will decorate the hat with golden paper, and his pants will be white flannel. All the 8 women will do the necessary sewing. [image] God of beans (14)
The mother of the siren wears a green suit, and her beaded blouse, and her shoes, and she will also wear a denim hat; this god lives in a place where there is water; we need to send this god an offering because it is he who sends the rain. [Image] God of chile. (15)
4 turkeys to offer and 4 turkeys; they will cut their throats and the blood is what will paint the bed when the pilgrims are prepared to leave to the cave. [image] God of peanuts. (16)
The god of 2 Church is far from San Pablito; we have to walk for 6 days, 3 days going and 3 returning, and on the last day, it will rain a lot, and the people will give thanks. [Image] God of bees. (17)
They’ll bring 10 sets of seeds and tissue paper, and lined paper, and spirits of the following animals: bulls, cows, horses, mules, horses [SIC], donkeys, chickens, and turkeys. [image] God of corn cobs. (18)
3 big figurines, one man and two women, that are the mothers and the father of the seed; all of them will be dressed as well, and the figurines will be placed upon a trunk to bring to the cave. 4 young men will carry them. [Image] God of sugarcane. (19)
For example: if the pilgrims leave here in San Pablito on Monday, they’ll arrive on Wednesday, and on that same day, they will make the offering in the cave, and none of them will sleep all night. [image] God of coffee. (20)
At the altar, the men are praying; they’re asking for different things or animals, some are asking for bulls, cows, horses, and sheep. All night the men and women, boys and girls, are praying, and everyone is happy. [Image] God of chayote [Sechium edule] (21)
Then at dawn the next day, the shaman will say, now we’re going to return to San Pablito, now we’re going to sing, all the men and the women singing our song. I’ll bring my seeds of coffee, sugarcane, tomato, tomatillo [jitomate, tomate, but see notes in essay on regional names of plants], and we’re going to sing the entire trip. [image] God of tomatillos. (22)
On the road, the men will whistle as if they were herding animals, or they’ll carry the tone that the women are singing. In the road everyone will go contented. [Image] God of jicama. (23)
When there is one kilometer to go to San Pablito, there, a large group will meet the pilgrims. The men will all bring their provisions and enchiladas to eat in the road. And the pilgrimage will look for a flat place for everyone to eat. The people who bring the tortillas will also bring candles. [Image] God of tomatoes [probably Solanum lycopersicum]. (24)
The women will all come singing and walking slowly. They’ll come with lit up by their candles, and all the musicians will come playing music. Everyone will dance until they arrive back at the oratory. The trunk that the pilgrims brought will be placed upon the altar. All the men and women are going to kneel and start to pray. They’re going to share all their thoughts with the god of seeds. [Image] God of milpa beans. (25)
After the prayers, everyone will be able to rest, because everyone will be very tired. The next day, there will be another celebration, and all the people are very satisfied, because it’s already raining a lot, and the celebration will continue. It will take three days to end. [image] God of papayas. (26)
4 days after the celebration, the shaman (curandero) and the musicians will return to the oratory to remove the dead flowers. The musicians are still playing, and you cannot just throw the flowers where you want. They’ll be thrown in an isolated area outside the town. [Image] God of bananas. (27)
This is how the offering to ask for rain ends. The ceremony takes 15 days to finish. [image] God of oranges. (28)
