Kairos: An Icon of the Annunciation at St. Catherine's Monastery on Mt Sinai/Egypt

The icon of the Annunciation, from the 12th century depicted the Archangel Gabriel’s appearance to the Blessed Virgin Mary, more to ask, rather than to announce, whether she might be willing to participate in the events of Salvation History by bearing a son, “the Son of the Most High.”   Icons are considered part of liturgy and Dr Crego's lecture will draw upon one of the dicta of the late liturgical scholar, Robert F. Taft, given while introducing a lecture at the meeting of the Societas liturgica in Boston in 1985: “Everything means something.” Dr Crego will begin with the meanings of the icon in general in the Orthodox liturgical setting and in the context of the Orthodox understanding of symbols.
