Historians at the Movies | 1776
1776 is musical made shortly before and in honor of the 1976 Bicentennial; it is set in Philadelphia the week before the 2nd Continental Congress declared independence. See Jefferson, Adams, and Franklin do fan kicks while singing about sex! Silly, but apparently controversial enough that its hardest-hitting song, “Tobacco to Rum to Slaves” (regarding Jefferson’s excised clause in the draft Declaration, “he has waged cruel war against a distant people who never offended him...”) was shortened in the original movie release. Another song, “Cool Considerate Men,” was removed entirely, allegedly at President Nixon’s request. Both are restored in the Director’s Cut. We will have a short historical talk on the film beforehand and discuss it in the chat.
