Lynda Johnson Robb and Luci Baines Johnson

For a year in which the university celebrated the 100th anniversary of the birth of its most famous graduate, an ideal finale is the Lyndon Baines Johnson Distinguished Lecture given by the President's two daughters and moderated by two of his former aides.

Sisters Lynda Johnson Robb and Luci Baines Johnson were teenagers when their father suddenly became President of the United States on November 22, 1963. They both married during their father's presi­dency, and they were frequent residents of the White House as young mothers while their husbands served in Vietnam. They witnessed the tumultuous late '60s from a unique vantage point. Both have been enthu­siastic community volunteers, earning numerous civic awards for their service. Lynda and her husband Charles Robb, former Virginia Governor and Senator, are parents of three daughters and live in McLean, Virginia. Luci is the mother of three daughters and one son (Lyndon Nugent, Texas State class of 1989), and she and her husband Ian Turpin live in Austin.

Robert Hardesty and Harry Middleton were speechwriters for President Johnson and helped him write his memoirs after leaving Washington. Hardesty is President Emeritus ofTexas State, having served as president from 1981 to 1988. During his tenure, he initiated the Lyndon Baines Johnson Distinguished Lecture Series. Middleton became the founding Director of the Lyndon B. Johnson Library and Museum and worked in that capacity for 30 years.

Texas State embraced a year-long Common Experience theme of "Civic Responsibility and the Legacy of LBJ." In commemorating the anni­versary, the university joined in partnership with the LBJ Library and Museum, the LBJ School of PublicAffairs, rhe LBJ Foundation, the LBJ national and state parks, the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, and the LBJ Museum of San Marcos.
