The Treanor Scholarship
Criteria for receiving the scholarship:
Each year the Department of Philosophy will announce and open applications for the Treanor Scholarship. Applicants will be asked to submit a one page statement about why you find the study of philosophy valuable.
Student responses must be submitted to the Department Chair by March 1.
A committee appointed by the chair will review the submitted responses. The committee will select the submission that, in the judgement of the committee members, best answers the challenge.
The author of the winning response will be awarded a $1000 academic scholarship for the following academic year.
Additional criteria:
- Overall GPA 3.0 or higher.
- Must be enrolled in a Philosophy course at time of application, be a philosophy major, or a philosophy minor.
- Open to both graduate and undergraduate students.
Award:
The presentation will be at the College of Liberal Arts Awards Day Ceremony in April.
$1000 to be awarded for the following academic year.

The David Hume Scholarship
This scholarship will be awarded yearly in April to the philosophy major or minor who writes the best paper in the analytical tradition of Hume with emphasis on clear argumentation, concern for language, and scientific evidence if appropriate.
Guidelines

The recipient must be a full-time junior or non-graduating senior and have maintained a 3.0 GPA.

The topic of the paper submitted for the competition may be derived from courses taken in the Department of Philosophy at Texas State University.

The paper must be typewritten, double-spaced.

Deadline for submission to the Chair of the Department of Philosophy is March 1.
The Chair will convene a review committee to select the best paper.
Award
The presentation will be at the College of Liberal Arts Awards Day Ceremony in April.
The stipend is $1,000, to be awarded for the following academic year.

The Glenn and Donna Joy Scholarship in Philosophy and Logic
Criteria for receiving the scholarship:
Each year the Department of Philosophy will announce and open applications for the Glenn and Donna Joy Scholarship. Applicants will be asked to submit a brief (not more than 250 words) statement explaining the importance or relevance of logic.
Student responses must be submitted to the Department Chair by March 1. Responses must be typed, double-spaced, and follow either MLA or APA style.
A committee appointed by the chair will review the submitted responses. The committee will select the submission that, in the judgement of the committee members, best answers the challenge.
The author of the winning response will be awarded a $1000 academic scholarship for the following academic year.
Additional criteria:
- Overall GPA of at least 3.0 at the time of application.
- Completion of minimum of 45 credit hours at the time of application. Scholarship is for upper level undergraduates.
- GPA in PHIL courses of at least 3.0.
Award:
The presentation will be at the College of Liberal Arts Awards Day Ceremony in April.
$1000 to be awarded for the following academic year.

The Victor Holk Graduate Scholarship in Philosophy, Sustainability, and Creativity
Each year the Department of Philosophy will announce open applications for the The Victor Holk Graduate Scholarship in Philosophy, Sustainability, and Creativity. Applicants will be asked to submit a brief (not more than 250 words) statement explaining their interest in, and the importance of, graduate study in Philosophy, Sustainability, or Creativity.
Student applicants must be submitted to the Department Chair by March 1. Responses must be typed, double-spaced, and follow either MLA or APA style.
A committee appointed by the chair will review the submitted responses. The committee will select the submission that, in the judgement of the committee members, best explains the importance for the student of graduate study in Philosophy, Sustainability, or Creativity.
Additional Criteria:
- Overall GPA of at least 3.5 at the time of application, for current graduate students.
- Overall GPA of at least a 3.0 for graduating senior undergraduates.
- Graduate Standing, or acceptance to the Graduate College, for the study in Philosophy or Sustainability.
Award:
When possible, the presentation will be at the College of Liberal Arts Award Day Ceremony in April.
The author of the winning response will be awarded $1000 scholarship for the following academic year.

Graduate College Scholarship
Each year the Graduate College awards scholarship awards ranging from $1000-$5000 per semester. The Application Deadline is 1 March. Details available HERE.

Outstanding Undergraduate Student Award in Liberal Arts
An annual award will be made to an outstanding undergraduate student in the College of Liberal Arts. Students are responsible for submitting applications to their major department. APPLICATION DEADLINE: 15 February

Outstanding Graduate Student in Liberal Arts
An annual award will be made to an outstanding graduate student in the College of Liberal Arts. Nominations may be submitted by graduate faculty members, in consultation with the nominee. Both part-time and full-time graduate students in Liberal Arts graduate programs may be nominated. Nominees must have completed at least 18 hours of graduate work at the time of nomination and must have earned a Texas State GPA of at least 3.75. Any graduate student who meets the criteria may be nominated.
