Band Graduate Teaching Assistantships

GRADUATE TEACHING ASSISTANTSHIPS  |  DEPARTMENT OF BANDS

The Texas State University Department of Bands offers Graduate Teaching Assistantship positions to individuals desiring a Master of Music degree in Instrumental Conducting. Students in this program are offered opportunities for personal and professional growth in concert and athletic-affiliated ensembles while working alongside Director of Bands Dr. Caroline Beatty, Associate Director of Bands Dr. Kyle Glaser, and Assistant Director of Bands Mr. Matthew Holzner.

Position                                                                                                                                  

The Graduate Teaching Assistantship for conducting majors provides opportunities in the following areas:

  • Guest conduct the Wind Symphony and Symphonic Winds in select performances
  • Serve as assistant conductor or co-conductor of the Concert Band
  • Assist with daily operations of the band program
  • Assist with the Bobcat Marching Band
  • Assist with the Bobcat Basketball Band
  • Assist with academic courses, departmental special events and camps

Graduate Assistants are expected to participate in the Wind Symphony and maintain an exemplary grade point average.

Qualifications                                                                                                                         

  • A Bachelor of Music degree, preferably in music education
  • Acceptance into the Graduate College and School of Music
  • Graduate-level performance skills on principal instrument
  • Musicianship, conducting skills, and rehearsal ability that enable the applicant to conduct university ensembles
  • Public school teaching experience is desired

Stipend                                                                                                                                   

Band Graduate Assistants receive a stipend determined by percentage load. Health insurance can be arranged and additional scholarship assistance is possible for exceptional performers.
