Humanities Centers and Councils

In 2001, the National Endowment for the Humanities selected the Center to serve as the Southwest Regional Humanities Center, part of an initiative to establish such centers around the country. Although that initiative came to an end, the Center continues to participate in NEH activities and programs. The Center collaborates with Humanities Texas, the state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Funding from the challenge grants that helped establish the Southwest Regional Humanities Center at Texas State continues to support the work of the Center for the Study of the Southwest and the Jones Professorship in Southwestern Studies.

The original idea for the Regional Humanities Centers was that there should be nine across the country. By 2012, only two of the centers retained the regional humanities center name while others evolved in broader or more distinctive regional studies centers.
