Mathworks Students Achieve High Honors In International Math Contest

 

A team of four middle school students from the Mathworks center at Texas State University has won recognition in the Primary Math World Contest in Hong Kong, China.

 

The team of Lazar Ilic and Sunny Tian of Austin, Alex Yang of Sugar Land, and Lilian Zhan of College Station was awarded the Po Leung Kuk Cup as the top non-Asian team in the international competition held this summer.

 

In nine years of participation, this was the seventh occasion for the Mathworks team to win the Cup.

 

The four contestants were chosen from among more than 500 students across Texas who took a qualifying test. In June, the team members attended Mathworks’ residential Junior Summer Math Camp on the Texas State campus in San Marcos as part of their training.

 

“I loved the chance I had to be on the Mathworks PMWC team.  Going to Hong Kong was very fun!  My team was fun to work with.  I think it's great to be able to do math with other people,” said Ilic.

 

The competition this year drew teams from Australia, Bulgaria, China, India, Indonesia, Macau, Malaysia, Taiwan, the Philippines, Russia, Singapore, South Africa, Thailand, the United States, and Hong Kong. The math contest is hosted annually by the Po Leung Kuk, a charitable organization based in Hong Kong, to encourage young students' interest in math while promoting cultural exchanges.
