Dr. Ernest & Sarah Butler Endow Mathworks Scholarship At Texas State University
November 5, 2012 – San Marcos, TX
Texas State University-San Marcos is excited to announce a new donation from Dr. Ernest & Sarah Butler of $100,000 to endow the "Sarah & Ernest Butler Endowed Scholarship in Mathworks." This named scholarship will provide opportunities for promising young students to participate in the Mathworks summer math programs.
Dr. Max Warshauer, Director of Mathworks, said "We are so honored and grateful to the Butlers for their gift to establish the Sarah & Ernest Butler Mathworks Scholarship. This scholarship will give opportunities to young students for generations to come, helping them develop their mathematical abilities to the fullest. Many of these students could not participate without support, and this scholarship will help us make sure that all students can attend our summer programs regardless of their financial background."
“We hope this will enable young students who want to learn to be able to participate in this excellent program,” said Ernest Butler.
Founded 24 years ago, the Mathworks Honors Summer Math Camp (HSMC) serves 60 talented high school students each year in an intensive six-week residential program. Students are taught by university professors, and share in the joy of mathematical exploration and discovery with their peers. The deep and lasting impact of the HSMC is highlighted by the fact that more than 80% of HSMC alumni go on to major in math, science, or engineering in college. To reach out to younger students, the Mathworks Junior Summer Math Camp (JSMC) includes both a day camp and a residential program. The day camp includes more than 200 students each year, providing 4th-8th grade students a solid mathematical foundation for the following school year while preparing them for algebra and higher-level mathematics. The residential program has 32 middle school students from throughout the state and beyond for a two-week program at Texas State.
Mathworks summer math programs provide opportunities to students who would not otherwise have access to high quality math programs in their own communities. Students from across Texas have attended the Mathworks summer math camps, along with students from other states and countries. National and international acclaim for the programs includes recognition from the American Math Society, Time Warner Cable's Connect a Million Minds, Google's Roots In Science & Engineering, and the Siemens Foundation.
