Mathworks Announces Its 2012 PMWC Team
San Marcos, TX - November 23, 2011
Four middle school students from Texas have earned places on the 2012 Mathworks team scheduled to compete in the Primary Math World Contest (PMWC) in July. The PMWC is an international math competition in Hong Kong for middle school students that draws more than 40 teams each year.
The 2012 Mathworks Team consists of the following students:
1. Daniel Whatley, The Woodlands, TX (6th grade, Whatley Homeschool)
2. Stephen Price, Houston, TX (8th grade, Harmony School of Excellence)
3. Gina Chen, Austin, TX (7th grade, Kealing Middle School)
4. Vivian Liu, Houston, TX (7th grade, Harmony School of Excellence)
Mathworks administers the Mathworks Math Contest to help select the four team members, as well as identify promising applicants for the residential Junior Summer Math Camp (JSMC) held at Texas State University. Price, Chen, and Liu are all former participants of the JSMC. This year more than 320 students took the Mathworks Contest. The median score was a 2 out of 15. The team members will be participants in the 2012 residential JSMC as part of their training, and then travel to Hong Kong for the PMWC. In nine years of competition, the Texas team fielded by Mathworks has been awarded the Po Leung Kuk Cup seven times (top non-Asian team), as well as tying for first place overall in 2008.
