Silicon Labs Boosts Mathworks Programs At Texas State
Austin, Texas - August 15, 2012
Silicon Labs, an integrated circuits industry leader based in Austin, has provided a $45,000 donation to the Mathworks center at Texas State University in support of three core programs conducted this summer. The funding supported a pipeline of young Central Texas students into math, engineering, and technology fields.
Six “Silicon Labs Counselors” from Austin assisted high school students during the six-week residential Honors Summer Math Camp (HSMC) conducted at Texas State in June and July. The camp counselors are college students themselves, attending Caltech, MIT, and the University of Texas at Austin, majoring in math, science and engineering. They are HSMC alumni who chose to spend their summer serving as mentors and role models for the younger students.
Nine "Silicon Labs Research Mentors,” eight of whom are professors at Texas State and one a mathematics professor from St. Edwards University, mentored advanced students in the Honors Camp on mathematics and science research projects. They supported student teams conducting original work in mathematics for entry into prestigious research contests, including the national Siemens Competition in Math, Science & Technology.
Silicon Labs also sponsored a ”San Marcos USA team” to the Primary Mathematics World Contest held in Hong Kong in late July. The competition annually attracts more than 40 teams from around the world, including the San Marcos team of Mathworks students selected from more than 300 applicants who completed a screening test that was given statewide. The team attended the two-week Mathworks residential Junior Summer Math Camp, as part of their training, from June 4-15.
Silicon Labs and Mathworks together are focused on developing the abilities of young students in mathematics and giving them the skills to pursue degrees and careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
