Texas Workforce Commission Awards Summer Merit Program Grant To Texas State University

May 10, 2012 - San Marcos, TX

The Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) has awarded Texas State University - San Marcos a $61,474 "Summer Merit Program" grant in support of the 23rd annual Mathworks Honors Summer Math Camp (HSMC).  This grant will provide for 20 full camp scholarships to Texas high school students, engaging them in doing high-level mathematics and providing opportunities to interact with role models in the math, science, and engineering fields.

“TWC is pleased to partner with Texas State University on the successful Mathworks Honors Summer Math Camp,” said TWC Chairman Andres Alcantar. “This grant gives deserving students an opportunity to explore science, technology, engineering, and math disciplines, the foundation for many high-demand careers in Texas.”

The HSMC program was one of 14 grant awardees across the state, selected through a competitive process administered by TWC.  One of the goals of the Summer Merit Program is to remove financial obstacles for students who may not have had an opportunity to attend a summer camp, by awarding scholarships.  The grant also seeks to inspire students to pursue math, science, and engineering careers, thus increasing the number of college graduates in those fields.

“The Honors Summer Math Camp engages and prepares students of all backgrounds in math and science,” said Program Specialist Andrew Hsiau at Texas State University. “And it’s been a great success, with 80 percent of camp alumni going on to major in math, science, or engineering in college.”

The HSMC aligns with the grant goals by providing an intensive summer mathematical experience for students from across the state.  Students are taught by university faculty, mentored by undergraduates, and work with peers in mathematical exploration.  During the six-week program, students will also have opportunities to interact with guest speakers from academia and industry who serve as role models.  Advanced students in the program are matched to university faculty, conducting original research in mathematics, biochemistry, and computer science.  The camp runs from June 17 to July 28 on the Texas State University - San Marcos campus.
