Mathworks Celebrates 30th Anniversary

Founded in 1990, Texas State Honors Summer Math Camp (HSMC) began as a 4-week residential summer math program with 12 students, four teachers, and two faculty members (Max Warshauer and Don Hazlewood). In its humble beginning, the HSMC was sponsored by a small one-time grant from Texas State, and teachers and faculty worked without pay to ensure its success. Now, the HSMC has grown into a world-famous, highly-selective program for 60 high school students. Yet, amidst the growth and success of the HSMC, the faculty and teachers maintain the original joy and commitment it takes to run a successful program. The camp, which is still hosted at Texas State University, has since grown into a 6-week program where students can attend for up to three summers, honing their math skills and engaging in original research projects mentored by Texas State Faculty.

In 1995, the program expanded to include a two-week, half-day Junior Summer Math Camp (JSMC) for elementary and middle school students with 87 students and 6 teachers attending that first year.  Today, the camp offers five levels for students to engage in algebra and high-level problem solving with up to 200 students and 11 teachers. By 2001, the JSMC expanded to a Residential (JSMC-R) camp to prepare students to compete in the Primary Math World Contest. This team returned with the following awards:  Po Leung Kuk Cup- 1st Runner Up and Team Competition- 1st Runner Up!  Today, this camp hosts up to 48 middle-school students from across the United States and the world.
Expanding off the success of the camps, Mathworks added the Teacher Profession Development (PD) Program to provide guiding principles to support high-level mathematics education.  The Math Explorations Curriculum was introduced and approved by the Texas Education Agency (TEA) in 2014. This series of three textbooks and workbooks align to the TEKS for 6th, 7th and 8th-grade math.

Students and Counselors attending the 2019 HSMC do not need to pay for the 30th Anniversary Events, as they will be attending these events as part of the 2019 Program.
