AMS Epsilon Fund Awards Grant To Mathworks HSMC

February 23, 2011 – San Marcos, TX

The American Mathematical Society Epsilon Fund has awarded Texas Mathworks at Texas State University a $12,500 grant. Funds will provide critical support for student scholarships for the 2011 Honors Summer Math Camp (HSMC), ensuring that all admitted students can attend regardless of financial background.  Mathworks provides students opportunities to reach for higher goals mathematically while developing their critical and creative thinking.

Included in this award are two named scholarships, the “Roderick C. Caldwell Scholarship”, and the “Ky and Yu-Fen Fan Scholarship.”  This is the tenth grant awarded to the HSMC by the Epsilon Fund, which annually recognizes the top ten summer math programs in the nation.

The HSMC is a six-week residential program for talented high school students who show a passion for mathematics and learning.  Each summer, 60 students are invited to attend the HSMC, held on the campus of Texas State University - San Marcos.  Students are taught by mathematics faculty, mentored by undergraduate counselors, and share the joy of exploring mathematics with their peers.  Thanks to the support provided by foundations, corporations, and individuals, students who may not otherwise be able to attend are provided mathematical learning opportunities at the HSMC.

About the AMS Epsilon Fund
The AMS Epsilon Fund awards grants of up to $15,000 in support of summer mathematics programs for mathematically talented high school students. Support will be offered to existing programs that are most successful in nourishing mathematically talented youth. Programs should have been in existence for at least one year, and preferably more. Successful programs tend to have the following characteristics: run over a period of multiple weeks in the summer, bring in at least 20 high school students with mathematical talent, and generally be directed by mathematicians. Programs can focus on problem solving or mathematical research in any area of mathematics.
