Mathworks Student Receives Scholarship
Mathworks Honors Summer Math Camp student Joseph Lee has been declared a National Scholar by the Coca-Cola Scholar Foundation. Coca-Cola Scholarships are awarded based on character, personal merit and commitment. Merit is demonstrated through leadership in school, civic and extracurricular activities, academic achievement, and motivation to serve and succeed. Selection of each class occurs in three phases, beginning each fall and culminating the following spring with the announcement of the award recipients.
PHASE I. The first application seeks a record of the student's overall involvement in school and community affairs as well as academic success and employment. This application is due October 31 and culminates in the selection of 1,500 to 2,000 Semifinalists in December.
PHASE II. Semifinalists are notified and sent an expanded application in mid-December that requires detailed biographical data, an essay, a secondary school report and personal recommendations. Following the January deadline, the Program Review Committee selects 250 Finalists.
PHASE III. In the spring of each program year, Finalists attend the Scholar's Weekend in Atlanta, convened by the Foundation at its expense, to determine recipients of each level of award. The National Selection Committee designates 50 Finalists as National Scholars and 200 Finalists as Regional Scholars.
The Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation works on behalf and at the direction of the entire Coca-Cola system to reinforce the Coca-Cola system's legacy of community support while enhancing educational opportunities in the United States through scholarship awards and enrichment programs for young people who demonstrate, through academic excellence and leadership in their communities, their capacity for and commitment to making a difference in the world.
The future of the Foundation rests with the development of its Scholars, who embody the kind of energy and vision that the history of the Coca-Cola Bottlers and The Coca-Cola Company manifests. The value of the personal and educational development of the Coca-Cola Scholars and the value they return to their families, communities and educational institutions embodies the essence of the Foundation's mission.
The Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation has awarded nearly $23 million to more than 2,750 deserving Scholars between 1989 and 2003. Each year, the Foundation awards $20,000 to 50 National Scholars and $4,000 to 200 Regional Scholars from across the country.
