Mathworks Receives a Grant from Harman-Mayes-Sooch Family Fund
Mathworks at Texas State University received a $52,000 grant from the Harman-Mayes-Sooch Family Fund to support the 2021 Mathworks Summer Math Camps. This grant will fund scholarships for economically disadvantaged students, and help ensure that all students can attend Mathworks Camps regardless of their financial resources. Mathworks camps include a Junior Summer Math Camp (JSMC) for students in grades 4-8 and an Honors Summer Math Camp (HSMC) for students in grades 9-12. These programs will be held online this summer to ensure the safety of all participants. In addition, the grant will support a new school-year program that will prepare students for algebra and higher-level mathematics using the state-adopted Mathworks Math Explorations curriculum.
Mathworks programs are designed to reduce summer learning loss while introducing students to higher-level mathematics. The goal of each program is to excite young students with the joy of mathematical exploration and discovery and provide students with the foundation they need to pursue careers in STEM.
The funds provided by the Harman-Mayes-Sooch Family Fund will work to break the cycle of poverty by building pathways to educational success for all students. Mathworks is proud to have their support. The Principal Investigator for the grant is Dr. Cody Patterson, Mathworks Assistant Director for Teacher Education. Cody will work closely with Dr. Max Warshauer, Director of Mathworks, and Dr. Hiroko Warshauer, Mathworks Assistant Director for Research and Curriculum Development to conduct this exciting outreach program.
