MAA/Tensor Awards Grant to Mathworks Honors Summer Math Camp

San Marcos, TX – April 8, 2010
The Mathematical Association of America/Tensor Foundation has awarded a $6,000 grant to the Mathworks program at Texas State University – San Marcos. The funding will support scholarships for returning female students to attend the Honors Summer Math Camp (HSMC) that Mathworks will conduct this coming summer. Mathworks is one of twelve organizations around the nation to receive such an award.

“Young women have so much to contribute to mathematics. It is an honor to be awarded, and I am excited for the opportunity to work with these students,” said Dr. Sharon Strickland, Assistant Professor of Mathematics at Texas State. As the grant awardee, Professor Strickland will lead girls’ workshops during the HSMC to cultivate their interest and achievements in mathematics.

Established in 1990, the Honors Camp is a multi-level six-week residential program for talented high school students who show a passion for mathematics and learning. Students are taught by university faculty and mentored by undergraduate counselors. Returning students work together in teams on original research projects.
