Four Texas Middle School Students Selected to Compete In International Math Contest

Mathworks at Texas State University has announced the four students who have been selected to be members of the 2015 Primary Math World Contest (PMWC) team. The team will attend the 2015 Residential Junior Summer Math Camp (JSMC) program at Texas State University this coming June, and then compete in the PMWC in Hong Kong in July. The team members were selected from the 284 students who participated in the 2014 Mathworks Math Contest. The team members are:
  1. Radha Malhotra, 8th grade, Tomball
  2. Bella Xu, 6th grade, Sugar Land
  3. Benjamin Wright, 7th grade, Houston
  4. Edward Lu, 7th grade, Katy
The students expressed their excitement for being selected for the team. Radha Maholtra said, "Math is one of the few things in which you really have to stretch your mind. I have loved doing math competitions since 3rd grade and am very exicted to go to Hong Kong to compete this coming summer!" Edward Lu expressed, "Mathematics is the foundation of science. The mastery of math is a giant leap toward success in all sciences." Benjamin Wright noted, "When I was very little, I experienced some of the beauty of math. This fascinated me and gave me the desire to compete with not just people in my area, but with people from all around the world. I am grateful for the opportunity to do so in Hong Kong."
 
Mathworks has a fielded a team in the international PMWC 12 times, and has achieved the top non-Asian team recognition 9 times. In 2013 and 2014, the Mathworks team won first place overall in the PMWC.

Mathworks is a center for innovation in mathematics education at Texas State University. Our mission is to research and develop model programs and self-sustaining learning communities that engage K-12 students from all backgrounds in doing mathematics at a high level.  We aim to become a nationally recognized research center, studying the development of students' mathematical abilities and model programs for students and teachers.  Mathworks programs raise mathematics achievement for all students, while developing future leaders in science, engineering, and mathematics.
