Time Warner Cable Awards Grant to Mathworks

 San Marcos, TX - March 29, 2010

Time Warner Cable has announced a $5,500 grant to the Mathworks program at Texas State University – San Marcos through the company’s Connect a Million Minds initiative.

The award will directly fund operational support and scholarships for middle school students attending the Junior Summer Math Camp (JSMC) that Mathworks will conduct on the Texas State campus this coming summer.  Established 15 years ago, the JSMC is a two-week summer program for middle school students in grades four through eight. The program serves over 250 students each year, and includes hands-on, inquiry-based lessons for students to explore and learn mathematical concepts that weave in algebraic ideas.

“We are honored and happy to announce that Texas Mathworks has received a grant from Time Warner Cable that will provide scholarships for students to attend the Junior Summer Math Camp.  This grant connects Mathworks to the Time Warner Cable ‘Connect a Million Minds’ initiative that supports education for young students throughout the country,” said Dr. Max Warshauer, Director of Texas Mathworks.

Through Connect a Million Minds Time Warner Cable has committed $100 million of cash and in-kind resources toward a five-year philanthropic plan to address America’s continuing decline in the areas of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). ConnectAMillionMinds.com is the first-of-its-kind national aggregator of afterschool STEM opportunities. This tool provides parents with a free and easy way to find fun, hands-on learning opportunities for their kids and ultimately show students that the pursuit of science, technology, engineering and math education can be fun and engaging.

“As a company that uses technology to connect customers with information, entertainment and each other, we strongly believe we can make a significant impact on this critical issue,” said Stacy Schmitt, regional vice president of communications for Time Warner Cable. “We hope experiences like the Mathworks summer program will instill a sense of wonder and discovery in young minds and inspire a lifelong exploration of math, science and technology.”
