Time Warner Cable Supports Math Education With Donation To Mathworks Summer Math Programs
San Marcos, TX - September 3rd, 2014
Time Warner Cable (TWC), through its Connect a Million Minds (CAMM) initiative, has donated $3,000 to Mathworks, the center for math education at Texas State University.
This marks the fifth year of TWC partnering with Mathworks to extend opportunities to young students to develop their mathematical and problem solving skills. The contribution from TWC directly supported operational supplies and camp scholarships for middle school students to attend the 19th annual Junior Summer Math Camp (JSMC) program. With sessions in San Marcos and Round Rock, the JSMC impacted more than 300 students this summer, helping them to lay a solid foundation for math courses in the coming school years. The program engaged 4th through 8th grade students in hands-on activities, guided discovery learning, and numerous hours of fun doing mathematics. The 2014 JSMC ran June 9 - 20 and sessions were held at San Marcos High School as well as the Round Rock campus of Texas State University.
“We are excited to continue this valuable partnership with Time Warner Cable and its Connect a Million Minds program. Together we are developing the state’s future workers and leaders in science, engineering, and technology. However, many students do not have access to high quality math and science education programs, especially during the summer, when ‘summer learning loss’ sets these students back academically. With this donation, TWC is investing in today’s young students to lay the foundation for tomorrow’s workforce,” said Andrew Hsiau, Assistant Director of Mathworks.
Time Warner Cable has committed $100 million of cash and in-kind resources to their five-year philanthropic Connect a Million Minds initiative, addressing America’s continuing decline in the areas of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) by inspiring students to pursue STEM based educational activities. CAMM is the first-of-its-kind national aggregator of afterschool STEM opportunities, providing parents with a free and easy way to find fun, hands-on learning opportunities for their kids.
“Our long-standing partnership with Mathworks is a testament to the successful results we’ve seen among the young students pursuing future careers in STEM related fields - in this case, Math, said Kathy Brabson, Area Vice President of Operations, Time Warner Cable . “Mathworks has done an outstanding job in engaging students to mathematics and we’re proud to help in that endeavor.”
CAMM’s goal to connect one million young people to hands-on STEM learning opportunities and resources was reached on May 27. The milestone comes less than five years after President Obama and TWC announced this commitment in response to the White House’s “Educate to Innovate” campaign, which is designed to moveAmerican students from the middle to the top of the pack in science and math achievement over the next decade.

About Time Warner Cable’s Connect a Million Minds Initiative
Time Warner Cable (TWC), the second-largest cable operator in the U.S., launched Connect a Million Minds (CAMM), a five-year, $100 million philanthropic initiative to address America’s declining proficiency in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), which puts our children at risk of not competing successfully in a global economy. Using its media assets, TWC creates awareness of the issue and inspires students to develop the STEM skills they need to become the problem solvers of tomorrow. Program highlights include: original PSAs that challenge public perceptions of STEM; a unique website, www.connectamillionminds.com, where parents and community members can pledge to connect young people with the wonders of science; and “The Connectory”, a one-of-a-kind online resource that makes it simple and easy for parents and students to find informal science and technology learning opportunities in their communities. TWC’s national CAMM partners are CSAS (Coalition for Science After School) and FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology). Local TWC markets are activating CAMM across the country with community-specific programs and partnerships.
