HSMC Alumni

Hundreds of young students have attended the Mathworks Honors Summer Math Camp (HSMC) over the past 25 years.  Alumni of our HSMC have gone on to great success in advanced academic study and budding careers.  The formative experiences of the HSMC develops and builds future leaders who are able to make an impact on and give back to society.

The average SAT math score of HSMC students is 720 (95th percentile) and the average SAT verbal score is 640 (90th percentile).

University Admissions

HSMC students apply to and are frequently admitted into the nation's top-tier universities.  Almost 80% of HSMC alumni go on to major in math, science, or engineering in college.  The large number of HSMC alumni at some of the nation's best colleges provides a welcoming community to new students. The network of HSMC alumni remains active during a student's academic career and beyond.

Research Competitions

As part of the HSMC, returning students have the opportunity to conduct original math research with university professors.  Our students have done exceptionally well in national research competitions, such as the Intel ISEF and the Siemens Competition in Math, Science, & Technology.  A full listing of HSMC student results in the Siemens Competition can be seen here.

U.S. Presidential Scholars

To date, seven HSMC alumni have been named U.S. Presidential Scholars.  This is one of the highest national awards that recognizes the top high school seniors across the country.

The Presidential Scholars Program is a nonpartisan, public-private partnership designed to recognize and provide leadership development experiences for some of America's most outstanding graduating high-school seniors.  The 141 students named annually as Presidential Scholars represent excellence in education and the promise of greatness in young people.

International Math Olympiad (IMO)

  • Bobby Shen, 2012, gold medal winner, and top-scorer on the U.S. team.  2013 gold medal winner.
  • Zach Abel, 2006, silver medal winner

MathCounts

The Texas MathCounts team that competes at the national level has included JSMC and HSMC alumni for many years now.

  • 2013, the Texas team placed third in the nation, and included Mathworks alumni Eric Li and Byron Xu.
  • 2012, the Texas team placed seventh in the nation, and included Mathworks alumni Lazar Ilic, Michael Ma, and Stephen Price
  • 2011, the Texas team placed third in the nation, and included HSMC alumni Patrick Guo and Alex Whatley
  • 2010, the Texas team placed sixth in the nation, and included HSMC alumni Steven Chen, Brian Xu, Robert Tung, and Victor Zhou
  • 2009, the Texas team placed first in the nation, and included Mathworks alumni Bobby Shen, Lilly Shen, Steven Chen, and Yury Aglyamov.  Bobby Shen was also the overall first place individual.
  • 2008, the Texas team placed first in the nation, and included Mathworks alumni Bobby Shen, Kevin Li, Ding Zhou, and Kevin Tian.  Bobby Shen was also the overall second place individual.
  • 2007, the Texas team placed first in the nation, and included Mathworks alumni Kevin Chen, Bobby Shen, and Kevin Li.  Kevin Chen was also the overall first place individual.
  • 2005, the Texas team placed first in the nation, and included Mathworks alumni Jeffrey Chan, Mark Zhang, and Kevin Chen.
