History of SASP
Mr. James Mathews, SLAC’s Learning Lab Coordinator from 1992 to his retirement in 2010, brought together a group of Texas State professional staff in 2005 to plan the first SASP Conference. His primary objective was to create a vehicle for professional development and training that would also create a sense of collaboration and community among the various centers providing academic support across campus. The original committee was made up of representatives from SLAC, James Mathews & Lindley Workman Alyea; the Writing Center, Nancy Wilson; Math Cats, Illona Weber; Student Support Services, Cheryl McWilliams; and the Collaborative Learning Community, Susan Romanella. In its early years, SASP took place in Flowers Hall until the size of students in attendance made moving to the LBJ Student Center a necessity. The SASP Conference was held annually from 2005 – 2019, taking a necessary break during the COVID-19 Pandemic from 2020-2022, and returning to campus in February 2023.
