Organizations
Astronomy Club
The Astronomy Club at Texas State University is composed of students across multiple disciplines that have a love of and interest in astronomy. They are involved in many activities including, but not limited to, exploring the night sky, educational outreach, and camping.
Graduate Physics Society (GPS)
The Graduate Physics Society at Texas State University was created to foster a community among the graduate students of the Physics Department and those graduate students interested in Physics. This community promotes interests in research, academia, and professional development. If interested in joining our meetings or our mailing list please contact David Palmore (dcp90@txstate.edu) or Dr. Theodoropoulou (ntheo@txstate.edu).
Mexican American Engineers and Scientists
One of our most active student organizations on campus is the Mexican American Engineers and Scientists group also known as MAES. It is open to all students. Among many activities, MAES holds an annual Science Extravaganza for middle school students each year. There is also a local chapter here at Texas State. For more information on activities and how to join, contact Dr. Donnelly (donnelly@txstate.edu), the faculty advisor.
Society of Physics Students
We now have a currently active Texas State Society of Physics Students chapter. Meetings are held on Thursdays from 5:00 to 6:00pm in either RFM 3223 or 3241. Contact Dr. Donnelly (donnelly@txstate.edu) for more information. (There is also a national Society of Physics Students.) The group holds weekly meetings, participates in local physics conferences, performs demonstrations at local schools and educational events and generally has a geeky good time.
The Society of Physics Students (SPS) is a professional association explicitly designed for students. Membership, through collegiate chapters, is open to anyone interested in physics. The only requirement for membership is that you be interested in physics. Besides physics majors, our members include majors in chemistry, computer science, engineering, geology, mathematics, medicine, and other fields.
Within SPS is housed Sigma Pi Sigma, the national physics honor society, which elects members on the basis of outstanding academic achievement. This unique two-in-one society operates within the American Institute of Physics, an umbrella organization for ten other professional science societies.
Society of Women in Physics
The Society of Women in Physics (SWiP) encourages interest and leadership of women in physics and welcomes all who are dedicated to promoting gender equality within physics. We provide a supportive community whose members share their experiences, advice, and ideas; and provide our members with outreach opportunities both within TXST and the greater San Marcos area. SWIP every Tuesday from 11-12:30 pm in the conference room in the main office. If you are interested in learning more about our organization feel free to contact Dr. Alice Olmstead (alice.olmstead@txstate.edu).
Women in Science and Engineering (WISE)
Since 2010, Texas State University’s Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) Conference has provided opportunities for young women studying for careers in the science and engineering fields to gain insights into successful engineering, science, and career practices from experienced professionals and educators
