Graduate Scholarships

Departmental of Physics Scholarships

Currently the department does not have funded graduate scholarships. See below for College of Science and Engineering scholarships for which Physics graduate students are eligible.



Departmental of Physics Awards

Departmental awards recipients are nominated by physics faculty, selected by the Physics Department Scholarship Committee, and approved by the Physics Department faculty. Recipients are honored at the Physics Award Ceremony each spring.

Students interested in being nominated for the Physics Department Awards described below should contact a member of the Physics Department Scholarship Committee.


Excellence in Graduate Research

Criteria and Eligibility:  Awarded to a graduate student who graduated or will graduate during the academic year (August through May) they are being nominated, and who has demonstrated high scholarship in his or her thesis work.

Award: A $500 award and an award certificate.


Outstanding Graduate Teaching Assistant Award

Criteria and Eligibility:  Awarded to a student who has served as an outstanding Graduate Teaching Assistant in the current academic year.

Award: A one-year Student Membership to the American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT) with electronic access to the American Journal of Physics and The Physics Teacher, an award certificate, and a letter of recognition from AAPT.



College of Science and Engineering Scholarships & Awards

Students interested in being nominated for the College of Science and Engineering scholarships and awards described below should contact a member of the Physics Department Scholarship Committee (listed above) or discuss with their thesis advisor, according to the eligibility / nomination requirements for each award. Application forms and additional information on these awards can be found on the College of Science and Engineering scholarships website.


Outstanding Graduate Student Award

This award recognizes a College of Science and Engineering graduate student who possesses outstanding characteristics in scholarship, research, teaching and service.

Criteria and Eligibility: Any current graduate student in the College of Science and Engineering whose Texas State GPA is 3.25 or greater, based on 18 hours of graduate work earned at Texas State, and who exhibits leadership and participation in departmental, college, or university activities.

Award: A plaque presented to the student, and a perpetual plaque with the student's name displayed in the Dean's office.

Dorothy Coker Research Fellowship

The primary purpose of the Dorothy Coker Research Fellowship is to fund graduate (master’s level and above) student research in any of the scientific disciplines.

Criteria and Eligibility: Any full-time Texas State graduate student pursuing a graduate degree in the College of Science and Engineering is eligible to apply. Past recipients of the Coker Fellowship are ineligible to compete for additional income from the Coker endowment.

Award: The maximum fellowship award is $2200.

Process: Applications require the approval of the applicant’s thesis advisor. Application deadline February 1st apply via BOSS.


Durrenberger Scholarship for Women in Science

Criteria and Eligibility: Awarded to women pursuing an undergraduate, master’s or PhD degree in the College of Science and Engineering. Evidence of excellence to be included in the application packet should include, but is not limited to, an updated CV or resume emphasizing scholarly accomplishments and previous honors, and a statement of personal and professional goals related to how a degree in the sciences may have greater societal impact.

Award: $1000 to $6000, depending on the level of the student.
