Admissions FAQs

  • Our priority application deadline is January 15th.

The priority deadline is for first-consideration for admission and first-consideration for fellowships, scholarships, and graduate assistantships.

If spots remain in the cohort after review of applications received by the priority deadline, additional applications may be reviewed on a first-come, first-served basis until the standard application deadline of June 15th.

If you plan to apply after the prioirty deadline, we encourage you to email us at sahe@txstate.edu
  • No, the program only admits students for the Fall semester due to the cohort-nature of the program. In some instances, particularly for those students who are pursuing the program while working full-time, students can begin their coursework in the summer.

  • Absolutely! International students contribute to the diversity and cultural fabric of the SAHE Program and the Texas State community. Check out the Graduate College's International Students page for more information about applying to Texas State University as an international student.

  • GRE scores are no longer required for admission into the program. This change became effective for the Fall 2019 application cycle.
  • Yes! We provide different degree options for students based on their interest and ability to pursue the degree over 2 years or 3 years. Either way, you will be closely to connected to a cohort (or maybe more than one cohort!).

There are options for students to pursue the program while working full-time, preferably in the field of student affairs. Some students in this situation will take two years to complete the program, and some students will pursue the degree over three years.

Students who work full-time in the field of student affairs (or a closely related field) are also able to replace one of the two required internships in the program with an elective. We have found that students who are able to successfully pursue the program while working full-time are well organized and have a supportive supervisor at their workplace.

  • There are many Graduate Assistantship (GA) opportunities in various offices across the Division for Student Success at Texas State as well as off-campus at institutions in the region. All applicants who do not currently work full-time in the field are encouraged to interview for GA positions. Although obtaining a GA position is not guaranteed, all of the students in recent years have obtained GA positions, and the program faculty and staff actively assist in the assistantship placement process.  For more information check the Graduate Assistantship page.

  • Graduate Tuition Rates can be found here. Typically, each fall and spring semester students enroll in 9 credits when pursing the program full-time or 6 credits when pursuing the program part-time. Additionally, students typically enroll in 6 credits over the summer.

A number of funding resources and opportunities exist at Texas State University. Recently Texas State University's Graduate College has increased the number of scholarships available to graduate students. See your options here.

  • Yes, you are encouraged to come to campus and meet with current students and faculty. Email us (sahe@txstate.edu), and we can work with you to set up a campus visit. Visits may include:
    • Meeting with current students and faculty
    • Touring campus and assistantship sites
    • Attending a class

If coming to campus isn't an option at this time, check out our Chat with a Bobcat opportunity as well as virtual information sessions here

There is also an opportunity to visit and meet with students and faculty for prospective students who are invited to the SAHE Program Interviews in the Spring.
  • Typically, each semester students enroll in three courses when pursing the program full-time or two courses when pursuing the program part-time. Over the summer students typically enroll in two courses. During the Fall and Spring semesters courses are offered at the San Marcos campus. They are scheduled on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and/or Thursdays  typically from 3:30 pm to 6:20 pm or 6:30 pm to 9:20 pm.

Summer courses are offered online and in-person at the San Marcos and Round Rock campuses.

  • Cohorts typically consist of 16-20 students. Cohorts are made up of students pursuing the program full-time and part-time, and those participating in the program part-time have the opportunity to span two cohorts. The Student Affairs in Higher Education program seeks to admit students who bring a wide range of experiences and backgrounds.
  • Each fall we offer a number of opportunities to learn more about a career in student affairs and the SAHE Program. Check out those opportunities here

You are encouraged to review this webpage and view the archived webinar on the Prospective Students page- both have a lot of great information about our program and the admissions process. We are happy to answer any questions you may still have. Please email us at sahe@txstate.edu.
