Degree Concentrations
There are three degree concentrations for the M.A. in Professional Counseling: Clinical Mental Health Counseling, Marriage Couple and Family Counseling, and School Counseling.
All three concentrations are CACREP-accredited. At application for admission, students select one degree concentration in order to develop specific skills for that emphasis area. Click on the links below to learn more about each of the three degree concentrations.

Note: The 48 hour School Counseling Certificate is not eligible for accreditation, but is listed below and on the degree plan for comparison.
CMHC Concentration Overview:
- 60 hour program
- Meets academic and clinical experience requirements to apply to become a Licensed Professional Counselor Associate in the State of Texas after graduation
- A focus within this emphasis may be in play therapy, counseling adolescents, or counseling adults
- Students gain clinical field work experiences at counseling agencies in the Central Texas area

MCFC Concentration Overview:
- 60 hour program
- Meets academic and clinical experience requirements to apply to become both a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist Associate and a Licensed Professional Counselor Associate in the State of Texas after graduation.
- Field experiences include working with individuals, couples, families, and systems work.
- Can also work toward becoming a Registered Play Therapist.

SC Concentration Overview:
- 60 hour program
- Meets academic and clinical experience requirements for school counseling certification in the State of Texas and to apply to become a Licensed Professional Counselor Associate in the State of Texas after graduation.
- Provides preparation to work in as a counselor in a K-12 school counseling and in community settings.
- Provides focus in play therapy and counseling adolescents.
- Clinical field experiences are based in local schools.

SC Certificate Overview:
- 48 hour program
- Meets academic requirements for school counseling certification in the State of Texas.
- Provides a focus in both elementary and secondary school counseling.
- Provides preparation for working as a counselor in K-12 school settings.
- Clinical field experiences are based in local schools.
