Educational Leadership
Welcome to the Educational Leadership program at Texas State University. Our program prepares educational leaders for PK-12 public and private schools. We emphasize the development of skills in instructional leadership, cultural competency, reflective practice, and organizational leadership in order to advance strong school communities and meaningful learning for all. Signature focus areas for our programs are 1) leadership skills for systematic and continuous school improvement, 2) designing & analyzing collaborative campus and district level reform efforts that are effective for diverse student populations, 3) situating school and district based leaders within larger community and societal contexts, and 4) engaging school and community assets as the foundation for improvement efforts. This master’s degree program prepares candidates for principal certification in Texas. (Starting in the Fall of 2024 this program will be 30 hours. 36 credit hours, San Marcos & Round Rock campuses, Summer or Fall semester start).
This master’s degree program prepares teacher leaders through a combination of educational leadership courses relevant for teacher leaders and specialization courses in a cognate area in curriculum & instruction (such as reading, educational technology, special education, etc.). This degree does not lead to principal certification or other educator certification. (36 credit hours, San Marcos
This doctoral program is designed for individuals in a variety of educational roles who wish to develop and refine their abilities to provide leadership for educational excellence. It prepares candidates for K-12 school or district leadership, leadership of school improvement, higher education, research, and more. Candidates may elect to complete principal or superintendent certification in conjunction with the doctoral program. (63 credit hours minimum, San Marcos campus, Fall semester start, application deadline is February 1).
This non-degree academic program prepares candidates who already have a master’s degree in education or an education related field for principal certification in Texas. It is offered in an innovative Leadership Institute Format. (18 credit hours, Location varies, Summer semester start).
This non-degree academic program prepares candidates for superintendent certification in Texas. It may be taken as a stand-alone non-degree program or on conjunction with the Ph.D. in School Improvement program. (15 credit hours, Executive Meeting format, San Marcos campus, Summer semester start).
